Codes P1171pd, P0300, and P0171

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Codes P1171pd, P0300, and P0171

Post by greencupbay »

I have codes P1171pd, P0171, and P0300. It is really getting aggravating because I have replaced my PCV Gromet, fixed my ABS module, replaced my MAF sensor, cleaned my ETM, oil is fairly new (900 miles), and using 87 grade gas. When I sit at a light, an overwhelming smell of gasoline is there and my car runs rough; if I really take off, the car behind me is consumed in a cloud of smoke from my exhaust. When I am driving up a hill, the car seems to want to hesitate; almost feels like the transmission is constantly shifting gears (when codes aren't cleared). When I start the car, it makes a weird idle (jumps from 500-1500 and back 700). It, when idling correctly, idles at 700 or so. I have consistently been turned away from thinking it's the O2 sensors. What's wrong? Anyone else have these problems? Thanks guys.

Hello? Anyone have any ideas?

I don't know but an overwhelming smell of gas sounds dangerous. A leak in the fuel system could cause all those problems.

I'd start by replacing the fuel filter since it's cheap and relatively easy. You could even DIY. I got mine here:

I never thought about replacing the fuel filter. I will do that. By the overwhelming smell of gas, I meant that it is running way too rich.

Someone posted a pic of his Volvo on fire this morning with the caption "can you fix this?" The answer is no.

Don't mess around with fuel leaks. That's all I'm saying. ;)

It's not leaking fuel or else it would have registered on the diagnostics run from the Volvo dealership 2 weeks ago. It's just running rich. Is there anything I can do to fix the rich running? If anyone has any ANY ideas, lemme know! :D

Who 'turned you away' from thinking it is an 02 sensor? I had a problem on another vehicle with CEL coming and DTC indicating rich long term fuel trim.
Turned out to be leaking from a fuel 'spider' which was gummed up and allowing fuel to leak even when the injectors were closed. Used STP fuel injector cleaner and it fixed the problem (got rid of the gum which was keeping the little check balls open in the spider).
But no spider on the Volvo's so don't know if injector(s) could 'jam' open and cause a similar problem. Guess you could buy one new injector and swap out one injector at a time to see if you found a leaking one but sounds more like you have more excess fuel than would happen with a single injector being 'jammed' open.....
Not sure if faulty 02 sensor would set a DTC? But if 02 sensor not working, you would be running in open loop all the time and would be definitely running rich. But again sounds like you are running VERY rich.
Try to get connected to a scanner which shows how the voltage on the 02 sensors is cycling.
Let us know what you find.
Forgot to ask if it runs rich when cold as well as when hot?
Edit: Reread your post. Do you have the new 'yellow labeled' ETM? If not, definitely could be the problem and should be replaced under warranty....

Update: I took it to the dealership today and got some readouts. It was saying that I have a cylinder Misfire on cylinders 1,2, and 3. Also, my camshaft seals are leaking oil onto the timing belt. The O2 sensor gave the dealership the following code: "Long term fuel trim, bank 1-upper limit" twice (ECM-261A, ECM-262A). Mechanic said it might just be because of the coils misfiring that the sensor codes are there. I have to replace the coils, timing belt, and camshaft seals (and possibly the two other pulleys). I hope this is helping someone with similar problems. If you have a readout of a misfire on one cylinder, swap out the coil and see if it changes which cylinder has the misfire; don't go straight into the O2 sensors because they are an extremely expensive fix. I don't have a new ETM. The codes for that are fine, as I cleaned it out once. Thank you for your support, guys. I will report back and tell what happens.
Edit: my injectors are fine. When I replaced my PCV gromet I cleaned them and my ETM.

Depending on the mileage and previous maintenance, quite a few people get the water pump changed at the same time. The labour to do the water pump at a later date would be about the same again as doing the timing belt. They shouldn't charge a separate labour amount to do the water pump at the same time or just a nominal amount because if I recall it is only a matter of about 4 extra bolts while they have the time belt off. Usually the tensioner and idlers are replace at the same time. i.e. same logic re: labour while they are at it....

Hey guys. Just the other day I replaced 1,2,&3 coils because the dealership said that they are bad; I got them used off of ebay and the dealer claimed that they were in very good working order. I also am running premium grade gas now, but I am still getting misfires. Here are the codes: P0300, P0303, and P1171 pd (can anyone tell me what pd stands for?). Anyway, if you have any ideas or if this happened to you, please help me out. I'm getting really tired of working on this thing and nothing gets fixed.

Thanks for the time you friends are giving me.
