1988 240 DL Cooling system Leak

Post by NickWhit »

Several days ago I discovered, much to my horror, that my coolant reservoir was bone dry, and that my floor on the passenger side was mysteriously soaking wet. Checking under the dash, I found the source of the leak, a pipe which comes out from beneath the glove compartment at a right angle and continues on into the center area of the dash behind the AC controls. What I am wondering is if this pipe can be replaced, or if once I get in there I am going to discover that this is a much larger job than it is worth as often happens. In this case, what can I patch this with? It seems that the previous owner tried to patch the leak with roofing cement, which only worked temporarily. I am not too savvy on issues of the cooling system,

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

By 'pipe' do you mean a rubber hose or a metal pipe? Obviously the leak is associated with the pipework to the heat exchanger (heater radiator). If it is one of the hoses it is a fairly easy fix but if it is metal it may need a new heat exchanger.
