Hi -
I have a 1987, 240 sedan.
My mechanic says the speed sending unit in the differential is broken and needs to be replaced.
His shop has never actually done this repair before and he cannot find an obvious way to get access into the differential to remove and replace the unit.
Can you please tell me how to do this - or direct me to a source for this information.
Thank you.
Robert

go to >>> www.volvoclub.org.uk and do a search based on the part name and your Volvo year / model.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
The sending unit is mounted in the rear of the diff casing towards the top. The unit is accessed from the outside.
Depending on whether or not your car has ABS there is a choice of two sensors. In the attachment the sensors are part #11 (non-ABS) and #11a (ABS) The non-ABS is held in place by a screwed collar, part #13, which can be removed using adjustable pipe pliers. The ABS is held in by a hex socket screw, part #13a.
However, the first thing to check is the condition of the wires to the unit. Because of their position they are subject to a large amount of water, dirt, salt and many other things which can cause corrosion leading to bad contacts. They have been there for 22 years and have probably never been checked.
If you need more help we aim to please.
Bill.
