Looking for buying advice, 99 S80

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Looking for buying advice, 99 S80

Post by DougieFresh »

Hey I just found this forum the other day and it seems great. :D I'm looking to purchase a car for a family as my wife is pregnant now. The 2door Jeep just doesn't cut it anymore... :(

Anyways, I really like the Volvo S80, and I'm looking at a couple this week. Both are 99's, 120 and 130 K on them (70k and 80k miles) non-turbo. I love how smooth, quiet and luxurious the Volvo is.

Looking around the forum has me a little concerned about the reliability. I understand parts are expensive but I don't want to be stranded on the side of the road with a wife and baby.

Anyone have any advice or tips? I've seen lots of info about the ETM so I believe I should look for a yellow sticker on the front of it, meaning it's been replaced. Obviously a Volvo forum is the wrong place to look for non-biased advice, but I'll ask for some anyways... I'm also considering a Lexus ES 300, and I like the fact that Toyota products are known for their reliability.

Is the S80 as unreliable as it appears on the internet based on forums and reviews?

Honestly, if I were you, I'd go get a Nissan Murano or a 2004+ Maxima.

I'm very tolerant for unreliable cars but the S80 (mine in particular) is very expensive to fix and I learned it the hard way.
