You are normally just as well off pulling them both as a unit. Are you coming out of the top or dropping the subframe? Coming out of the top it might be easier to take all of the extra time to disconnect the transmission.

It largely depends on what tools you have at your disposal. In order to yank the engine from the top you need to remove a bunch of "other stuff". It actually comes out easier from the bottom but it isn't like you are going to slide an engine out from the bottom while the car is on ramps.

One of the best solutions I have seen is to use an engine hoist to yank the whole front body of the car up and lift it off of the disconnected subframe to get clearance to slide the motor and transaxle out from the bottom. I'm not sure what the pick points were for the chassis. It looked potentially tough on the rear part of the exhaust though as the car was at about a 30 degree angle or more.

I have not yet had to change a motor and I doubt I ever will unless it is on the Platinum so my insight is limited to what I have absorbed reading threads in this regard. If the '94 croaks I will promptly steal the M-56 transmission out of it and install it in the Platinum and then keep the rest as a parts car. If the '96 N/A dies it will be the best $350 car I ever bought and it will go to parts world as well.

P.S. Please post questions and comments on this topic as a response to your thread rather than firing up a new thread. It keeps things together where they make more sense.

I'm debating the same thing too. I picked up a '99 S70 AWD that will get a B5244T engine transplant. The existing engine is stripped down to the block, and all of the damagable items (radiator, intercooler, airbox, etc.) are already removed. It might actually take more time to reinstall the items needed to provide the lift points for taking it out of the top.

Does anyone have a VADIS report on dropping the subframe?

Thoughts?
