S60 2001 top of the strut is twisting

Post by adam180 »

Hello me again
I think i have a front suspension problem.
Looking under the bonnet, the part of the strut that comes through the body has a disk about the size tea cup.
When i push this it moves from side to side about half inch, and it can be twisted, (the otherside doesn't move).
Its been sqeaking for some time
I am not to sure what to ask for, when i go to the motor factors.
thanks adam

You need new upper spring seats.

Depending on your mileage you may want to consider new struts at this time as the labor is the same.

Use XC90 spring seats, thicker and they do fit, same size

Thanks JRL
your a diamond.
Its not also called a top strut mounting is it? (Been looking at online parts).
Car has 85,000 on the clock, and I am having a go myself, with the old man, who's good with cars.
Can you change one strut?, is it something that shouldn't be got from a beakers? (I love that car but, I'm on a budget)
Cheers adam

Nope, it's called a spring seat
Do not buy ANY AFTERMARKET SEAT (they fail quite quickly) except IPD's or go with an XC90 seat!
You can change one spring seat but not one strut, it would be very out of (suspension) balance

I fail to understand why you don't understand what I said!
VOLVO OEM ONLY or IPD aftermarket, NO ONE ELSE's.
These aftermarket pieces have been known to fail prematurely and it's an expensive repair so why screw around to save 20 bucks?
SCANTECH parts are JUNK and it says right there that these are Scantech

"I fail to understand why you don't understand what I said!"

Your not understanding a lot are you jrl!!!

Let me try to explain shall I, in simple terms.
I didn't know what IPD or Aftersales meant, if you look closely at is thread, you will see me ask polity what Aftersale means, (i understood there not very good).
It could be the fact that your american, and im not (thank god) that you "no under-standy".
Lastly how am i supposed to know "SCANTECH are JUNK" , when the first time you mentioned them is your last post, so your observation "it says right there" is meaningless!

No-one forces you into helping people on this excellent website.

Its good of you to give up your time, to help people with your expert knowledge of Volvo's, but if you cant speak to people politely, and not have rants at them, you should give it up, if i asked you something on what i am a expert in, you wouldn't have a clue.

Can you "UNDERSTAND" now!!!

Bye

I just replaced my left front spring seat today. Here is the Matthews thread on the topic: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=23283

A procedural write up is here: http://members.shaw.ca/heeeeee/strut/

IPDUSA part page is here: http://www.ipdusa.com/product.asp?strPa ... tRecord=21

This is a rubber part with a steel bushing in the center for the top of the shock absorber. What happens is the bushing strips loose from the rubber and then the shock just bounces around in there. You will also need spring compressors. Here's the set I bought at Amazon.com

Sorry,
I was going to give more clarity but the poster above did so.
For the future when you will hear this term; AFTERMARKET, parts, (NOT after sales, (that's an entirely different term and not applicable here), these are parts that are not factory parts but made by the "aftermarket", another company other than Volvo.
Many aftermarket parts are fine and work well on many cars, but in this case, OEM volvo suspension parts (and one other, ipd,) seem to be the best
ipd is http://www.ipdusa.com one of the best "aftermarket" companies to deal with even if it is an "American" company!
As I said, stay away from any Scantech parts.
How they have stayed in business for so long is frightening, most of their parts quality is very poor!
IPD's spring seat is possibly better than OEM or at least as "good".
This is a wear item so you want to buy the best made and the strongest because it takes a lot of punishment.
Use one of the IPD seats or go with a Volvo XC90 spring seat, this piece is more durable than the regular car part and will fit your car with no issues
Sorry for the (your) confusion, good luck
