Just bought: '01 XC70, couple problems...long cranking, etc

Post by TPLSM3 »

Just picked up an '01 XC70 with 143k miles for a good price & drove her home (900 miles). Looks like the car was really well cared for, inside & out look fantastic. On the drive home from picking her up, I did begin to experience an issue with long cranking. Basically when I stopped for gas or food for more than 5 min, I would go to start the car and it would crank for about 5-10 secs before actually starting. Once the car was started, it runs perfectly smooth with no hiccups at all. I did notice though that if I shut off the car, then started it again within a minute or so, it would start right away. It only cranks long when it sits for more than 5 minutes, feels like it's not getting fuel right away. Any ideas what to look out for? Is there a check valve or regulator that controls this?

The 2nd issue just happened this morning. Started her up and drove for about 10 minutes when the Check Engine light came on. I stopped by the local AutoZone to pull the code, found P0422. Looks like it's a code for the catalytic convertor or possibly o2 sensors or exhaust leak. How do I go about determining what it could be?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

YOU don't.
This code is a bit tough to decide which is bad.
I would have a Volvo dealer read it with the Volvo computer, usually they can pinpoint it to either a bad 02 sensor or the CAT itself.
Neither are cheap to replace but an 02 IS much cheaper.
If it's determined to be an 02 sensor, bite the bullet and use a gennie Volvo sensor, people have had issues with other aftermarket sensors
