How can you tell if the Timming Belt is Broken

Post by jabir357 »

My'94 850 turbo wagon will not start. Someone suggested that it might be the timming belt. A mechanic told me that if the cam shaft is moving and pulling the crank pully, then the timming belt is OK. The car stop on me at the supermarket and had to be toll home. Replace the fule filter, plugs, and had the battery recharged. Still won't start  Any suggestion is more than welcome.

Thanks :)

It's hard to say if the timing belt it broken without hearing the engine try to start, but the mechanic's suggestion sounds right. One thing you want to be careful of is that these 850 engines are "zero tolerance". That means that if the timing belt is broken and you are able to crank the engine, then the valves and pistons smack into each other resulting in very expensive engine work: bent con rods, bent valves, damaged pistons.
Good Luck
