Shopping for 1998 Volvo models

Post by blueberry1 »

I just donated a beloved '94 850 with approx 215k on it to charity and I am once again looking to buy another used, all be it pain in the rear, Volvo. This time I am looking into the 1998 models and I was wondering if someone with the knowledge and expertise would suggest me some tips on what to look for based on mileage and past experiences with these lovely machines. Thank you very much. :D

Sorry to hear about your old Volvo.

Almost all 850 models from '93-'97 have preety much the same engines like s,v,c,xc70 up to '99,with some minor modifications.

Basically, you might check everything problematic:timing belts replacing intervals, engine condition, mileage, transmission condition.

Good luck with your choice of Volvo.I wish you to have more luck than with your previous one.

As somebody trying to do a lot of work myself the 98 has been a great choice b/c many more of the 850 resources available on-line are relevant to me than if I had a later model. Watch out for positive crankcase pressure (smoke from dipstick / rear seal oil leaks), popping sound when you open the driver door, and of course just make sure it's CEL-free, AWD's do have some other concerns that are in a thread from last week. I don't think you should spend over 4k unless the car is just immaculate.
