S60 2.4T 2002 Automatic transmission fluid replacement

Post by seggs »

Reading through some of the posts, I have noticed that some people have had problems with transmissions on early model S60s. I have an '02 with 75k on it. In the service manual, it indicates that AT fluid should be changed at 52,500 miles on vehicles used for towing. I don't believe that this car has been used for towing(owned since 40k) but I'm a little concerned about whether or not I should just change the fluid given issues raised in other posts...I'd like to avoid potential problems. Any thoughts?

Also, am I complete idiot or is there no ATF dipstick?...can find it.

Thanks

The dipstick can be found courtesy of MadeInJapan:
it is under your air intake hose, very far down deep...between the front of the engine and air filter box...look down far- it has a small yellow handle on it...you'll have to clasp it to get it loose so you can pull it up. Check your fluid with your engine running and in Park after running through all of your gears for several seconds at time...even if the engine is warm, "cold" will be the side you check...best and most accurate reading is after you have run your car for at least 20 minutes on the highway...read on the "hot" side.
As well as checking the quantity check the colour and smell. It should be red and there should be no burning smell. I am a great believer in changing the fluid at 80,000 miles as a routine service item.
