Volvo 850 CD Changer giving "HOT" code

Post by TuHandy »

I just purchased a used Volvo 6 disc cd changer to put in my 1997 850. The changer seemed to work fine for a few minutes so I turned the car off and assumed everything was good.

When I came back out to drive the car a few hours later, the stereo had "HOT" on the display. I think I can figure out what "HOT" means but the car was off, no radio or cd playing. And its approx 25 degree's outside. The CD Changer case and internals felt cold. I let the car sit all night, but still read "HOT" on the stereo display.

Any advice :?:

I decided to tear into the CD changer and do some investigation.

I took the case off and then pluged the cords in. When I pressed the chgr button on the radio I watched the cd get shuffled into the correct position, but then nothing happened. It was not spinning. I thought I would help it along and spun the cd with my finger, and off it went. Played perfectly all the way through the cd. Then when I tried to change cd's it would not start to spin again till I gave it some help.

To make a long story short. It looks like the little motor that spins the CD is going bad and it was a little "HOT".

I will call around and see if someone can fix it for me cheap.

Thanks Mathew for a great site.
