My S60 has 73k miles and am getting the 'transmission service required' on instrument panel. was told an overhaul is the only thing that will turn that off. t or f?

The odds are that your tranny is toast
You can try a flush, add current software, reset adaptors, do a proper drive cycle and hope that it works.

That's about all you can do, it will work or not.
If not, you will need a new or rebuilt tranny which is worth more than the car is at this point or just drive it until it just quits.
This can be one day, one week or one year, no one knows!

Any slipping? Delayed shifting or delayed gear engagement? I would flush the trans first. Some damage has been done, but you can stop it from getting worse, and a flush will surely help!
