1987 760 Turbo - Strange boost issue - Good power, no boost.

Post by 1Grey760T »

Hello all,

Just joined your forums, looking forward to be "one of the guy" so to say...

I sold my 740 turbo and missed it, so I just bought a 1987 760 turbo 5spd wagon from a charity auction...

She runs GREAT and drives well, feels like she has a lot of power, never gags and has smooth, even acceleration, but the boost only goes to the end of the white section. Never gets to the yellow no matter what I try.

My experience with bad turbos says that if the turbo is bad, one will experience erratic idle, terrible acceleration and /or smoke... there are none of these symptoms. She just won't boost. Otherwise, she drives like any other N/A car does.

I just bought her yesterday, anybody have any opinions or insight as to where to look first? I don't see any disconnected hoses...

Many thanks...

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

You could have a blocked catalytic converter. Remove the plug in the top of the cat housing and see if that improves the boost. A noticeable difference indicates blocked cat. If there is no difference it indicates turbo, waste gate or intake obstruction.
