PTC nipple

Post by cxf »

Hi All,
Quick question, anyone know what the function of the ptc nipple is? Is it open all the time, closed all the time, or some combination thereof depending on....? Thanks for any info in advance, Dan

It is open all the time and it is used to suck the crankcase pressure out of the engine and recirculate it back into the combustion chamber. If it were to clog, then the pressure in the engine would have no were to go it would more then likely blow a seal.

The electrical thing is a heater, to keep the gases in the tubes from icing up in cold weather.

Why are not the crank case gasses forced into the intake regardless of the PTC nipple being functional? Once mine was not blocked anymore, cleaner could flow out all three orifices.

Also, on my '94 855T the vacuum line from the PTC does not connect to the intake manifold. It connects to a line of the back side of the motor. I have not figured out where it goes to yet.

Hi kruznby,
This ptc thingy continues to be a mystery to me too. I checked mine and everything was all clear and as you said cleaner flowed out of all three passages like an equal opportunity employer. Why I was checking it was because I have a new to me '96 850t with 141xxx miles with a slew of dealership receipts including a brand new (4000 miles ago ) turbo. Car is still not registered(i have had it about a month). I am getting some on again/ off again blue smoke. I also have a receipt for pcv service(big bux) so I took the whole thing apart to check it out and sure enough everything is new, which led me to the ptc thingy. When I took this hose off I could see fresh oil in the intake side of the turbo(clean oil) and also clean oil in the outlet hose/pipe from the turbo. This is what got me curious as to the actual function of the ptc. I plan on hopefully registering this car soon and giving it a nice high rpm workout and see what blowing everything out (Italian tuneup ) may do.
