S40 2005 how do I replace the headlight lens cover

Post by glenn6353 »

Someone backed into my vehicle, broke the right headlight lens cover. Can I just replace the lens. I did find a web page that sells aftermarket parts and they do sell a replacement lens with the seal, or as I've read on one post, does the whole unit have to be replaced.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
I did find a web page that sells aftermarket parts and they do sell a replacement lens with the seal,
Did it give the year? As far as I know the separate glass and seal was only for 2004 and earlier. For the 2005 model year, which was introduced in late 2004, the complete headlight has to be replaced.

Thanks Bill, you are right the web page only offers the lens cover up to 2004. If anyone is interested the web page is LampsAndLenses.com

Have you had to replace a headlamp? I was reading a post that gave step by step directions. There seems to be some screws that are hard to access. Is it something that someone with mechanical abilities can do? Or is it strictly a bodyshop job?

Not on one of this age. I am still in the 20th century with my cars - 18th century with everything else, according to my grandchildren.

However, the attached shows how it is done. No hidden screws, that was on the earlier model.

I have arrowed the locking plate as it took me some time to find it.

Thanks Bill. However, one more question if you don't mind. I'm not sure I follow, it looks like you're describing changing the lens cover. I thought the whole headight assembly had to be changed. That other post referred to removing the whole assembly and moving out the bumper 2 cm to get the headlight out. Is that correct?

Thanks,
Glenn

Glenn,

I miss Worcester.

Your light looks easier than the S70's - take a look.
Hope that helps.

Mine was the shortened version.

Moving the bumper was on the older model. When you pull the locking plate out the whole headlamp unit comes out. In JDS60R's longer version it shows that you have to remove the headlamp unit just to change the bulbs so, for once, Volvo has made it reasonably easy.
