What does hydraulic fluid in the engine mounts look like?

What does hydraulic fluid in the engine mounts look like?

Black maple syrup? anybody have one blow and shoot fluid everywhere? is there a way to tell if they are worn out before they go?

They are fairly binary, they either work or they are dead. They really don't give you any warning other than the way the car drives. The fluid is about like 90 weight gear lube - it is thick as I recall but it was gone on the last bad one I changed.
