2000 1.9t engine interchange with 2001-2004

I have a 2000 s 40 1.9t with a bad motor. the parts interchange books say that 2000- early 2004 will interchange. I have seen post that 2001 and newer will not work in a 2000. something about 2000 being variable timing and not being compatable with newer engines. any one have any ideas?? thanks
