sissy new 850 owner afraid of foglight

Post by dugitman »

hey,
everyone here seems mechanically competent so i'm embarassed to ask. Had 94 850 sedan with 150K for 8 months now. Can replace all lights per instruction manual online but no instructions for replacing front foglight and i'm probably making it more complicated than it is. What is it i'm not seeing(no lift or ramps so going by feel alot). Also when i bought car, glove compartment locking mechanism is broke(shut) and won't open. Any good ideas besides just pryin the d*@n thing open with a prybar? Lastly, backup (or reverse) lights have never worked. bulbs are fine but i met another 850 owner who has had 2 and said the reverse lights quit working on both his and he just never had it fixed or cared about it. Not that big a deal but would like it to work when my wife is rammin***cough cough*** backing it out of mall spots.
Thanks everyone...love this site.

I tried to replace my fog light and it was a bitch of a time. Basically there's a hard plastic cover for obvious reasons that is on very tight. That cover comes off by turning it counter clockwise which I found to be nearly impossible. I didn't have the right tool to do it because I wasn't able to do it with my hands so when I took it in for 90k service I just had the dealer switch it.

However, I think what would work would be to use a flexible wrench like one you would use on an oil filter, get it on tight and you'd be able to get it off. After that there's a spring that you push in and the inside cover comes off basically like any regular light which should be easy to figure out once you see it.

Hope that helped.

I too had a broken glove box lock. The dealer told me I had to break the face off and order a new one with the proper lockset. The cost made me search for other options. I bought a used face from Voluparts that matched my interior. It actually matched better than a new one because of the aging. I had already broken open the glove box (to get my radio code and manuals)when I got the new face. It took a little handy work (ie: lots of little parts) but I switched out the lockset from the new face, inserting just the keyed part from my old one. Works like a charm. Just be careful when you are putting face back in the car as the curved side supports like to fall back into the dash which becomes a major pain in the neck! All in all the job is well worth the hour you spend on it-not counting the time spent demolishing the face, which is actually fun!

will use all your advice although reverse-light switch may be beyond by ability...have to look at the setup to see if i'm capable of doing it. I am going to have to break in glove comp. now since owners manual is in there and just had to get new alternator installed--resetting stereo(wants code). When will it all end?!? LOL

Love this site and appreciate all your help,
Doug
