Jack point for lifting front of '01 V70?

Post by bocephus »

So I've searched through the forums (both here and at Swedespeed), but I can't seem to find any conclusive (or particularly helpful) information regarding where on the front end to position a hydraulic floor jack. I'm using a 3-ton jack, and I'd like to just slide it in under the car from the front and lift both front wheels off the ground. The Volvo manual doesn't offer any advice here; behind the radiator there's a subframe beam with an indented circle, surrounded by four indented lines--is this a "designated" jack point?

Sorry for asking such a newb question, but I really don't want to mess anything up in the process of trying to make repairs.

I'm not totally sure if it's a 'designated' jacking point...but I have used it over 10 times..no issue there!

Good Luck!

oh and to correct your spelling mistake...you meant 'noob'...lol... :D

For all the 850s:

I use a piece of 2x4 put under the sub-frame cross beam and jack up from that (on my both 850 and v70), works well for me.

Please open the PDF and see page 177 of 243 for lifting instruction. It was not designed to be lifted with both front wheels at once but you can jack from one side and put a jack stand under the lifting point. Then do the same ont he other side.

The subframe is too soft to jack on it. I have had to replace a few.

Come to think of it...I realize my advice my have been a little foolish...just because it worked 10 times doesn't mean it is the right way to do it. Sorry I was a bit tired last night. I agree with JDS60R that jacking the whole front end from one spot is not a good idea.

Cheers!

Hmm...on page 177, the manual states that "A garage jack can also be placed under the front of the engine support frame," though it also specifies that "If a garage jack is used to lift the car, the two jack attachments points should be used." Confusing, to say the least, which is why I posted my question here. But, if the general consensus is that jacking the front end from one spot is not a good idea, then I'll just go ahead and jack from the sides.

Thanks!

Hi 850 Turbo 1
Great to see you - hope all is well.

I like your idea. By displacing it across the width of the subframe you should be fine. As an appraiser I have had some folks jack it up from the front "as the manual says" but the contact point from the jack to the fram was only 1.5 to 2 inches wide.

I have seen this bend the frame. I think if you place the load across the front member, as you described ,and then put the jack points on jack stands you would be fine. To displace it you would need a good strong piece of wood or metal.

I would love to have a jack that could lift both jacking points at one time. That would be Awesome. Someone could fabricate a plat that went across and locked into the jacking points and then you could jack on that in the middle. If somebody out there has one please let me know.

I've done every oil change and more with 105K miles jacking up the car from the center of the cross beam using a simple floor jack with no other things like 2X4's. Guess my wheels fill soon fall off! Anyhow, so far I'm glad to report no indications of an issue like poorly wearing tires. Having a nice shaped adaptor to distribute the force would be nice, but it would need to be relatively stiff, and I'm not sure how to get there, but I guess anything would be better that what I'm doing, Ha Ha!!!

Jacking side to side would induce a lot of stress on the bushings on the side on the ground if one goes this route. Not sure which is worse.
