I am in the process of removing a Rack and Pinion from my 98 XC70.
Everything is removed and I cannot see where there is enough room to get the unit out either side of the car.
I almost have it out on the Driver's side with the sub frame dropped about 4 to 5 inches on the rear.
Does the driveshaft to the rear drive need to come out and how is that done?
I also have out the turbo and exhaust manifold to repair leaks.
Thanks.

The conclusion is that it comes out the DRIVERS SIDE only after removing the bolts from the PASSENGER SIDE motor mount (by the crank pulley) and then prying between the engine and subframe so the rack can come through between the subframe and the rear driveshaft assembly. You also have to remove the two brackets from the subframe, one is a rubber stop to keep the engine from rocking too far and the other is sort of a wraparound support on the drivers side of the rack. Room is quite limited back there!

Joy is a product of the heart and not circumstances.
I haven't removed a steering rack, but have removed a rear driveshaft on an AWD. It's pretty easy, but if you do it make sure to mark where each and every bolt goes; some are longer and putting them back wrong might mess up the balance. You can take the front of the shaft loose and drop it down. Also, to get to all the bolts, you will need to jack up both ends of the car and turn a wheel to turn the shaft.

So, JP, I'm staring at exactly the same situation. The steering post hits the left fender well and the right side mounts get hung between the drive shaft and subframe, right? What did you finally do? Would love to hear what worked....
