OK I need to replace the o-ring on the oil trap of our 2001 S-80 2.9. I was going to pull the intake and go at it from the top but I have been told you can get it from the bottom just as easy. I need to change the oil at the same time so I'm going to have the bottom cover off anyway. My question is can you in fact remove the oil trap from the bottom of the car and with only 45,000 on the clock do I need to replace the trap? I was told no I did not but would like to hear what you guys think.

You don't have to replace the trap, but I would be surprised if you could change the o-ring from the bottom. I took the intake manifold off to change mine. You will probably have to clean the trap, at least, to eliminate the overpressure that caused the o-ring to fail in the first place.

Can you tell me how you clean them. Do they come apart or do you spray carb cleaner in one of the openings? The replacement kit is only like $140 total so I don't have a problem with replacing it if it will make it easier. I was told by a tech that you can remove them from the bottom so if one of the Volvo techs here could tell me yes or no that would be great. I can pull the intake if need be but if you don't need to I would just as so leave it be. That can of worms thing I would prefer to avoid if you know what I mean
.
Thanks for the help guys!
