'96 850 turbo wagon hazard lights double trouble

Post by volvo55 »

Hi everyone,
I have a '96 850 turbo wagon and I am having a little trouble finding whats going wrong with the hazard lights. They were working fine until one day my lights were on even though they were set on off.

I have took out the fuse but that only keeps them off. I want to figure out a way to be able to control my hazard lights(they only stay on when I put the fuse in, I'm not able to turn them off or switch them to doing something else).

I really don't know what could have went wrong guys. Is there any way to get my lights back up and working?

Thanks!

I'm guessing your relay is stuck. Pull out your radio with both tabs on the sides, then push the hazard light switch directly out from behind.

Give the switch a good firm whack with the plastic end of a screwdriver, and see if you can get it to work again. That may or may not work, but you'll need to get a new/used switch either way.

EDIT: Hmm...that's in a different location in the 850's isn't it?

Yeah, on the 850 its to the right of the steering wheel. I wonder if it can't be pryed out with a small flat head or something.

On an 850 that normally means the theft alarm has been triggered. Use the key or the remote to unlock the door twice and it should reset.

H Folks,

This is actually my brother in the forum...lol....he started the thread.

Let me try to explain what is happening.

When the hazard fuze is in its spot...the hazard lights don't flash...they stay on SOLID just like headlights would stay on.

I actually touched them and they were very HOT!

I know (think?) this is alarm related so I tried unlocking and locking with both the keys and the remote in an effort to reset the alarm.

That didn't change anything. I tied starting and turning off the car....nothing . I've also played with the hazard button ...nothing
I also tried pulling a ton of fuses ...nothing

Unless the turning signals fuse is pulled out....the hazards lights light up solid

The hazard lights come on solid regardless of the car on or off.

Because of this., the battery actually completely drained.

I boosted and still the same thing SOLID BLINKERS.

Now I know you are confused...

My bet is still on the relay

If the car still starts, the alarm system isn't mad. At least, that's how it works on the S70, so I'm guessing it's the same.

It, like most of the other switches in the car, can be pried out with a small screwdriver.

IIRC, you've got another 850, so swap the hazard switches out and see if it works again.

I just took out the hazard switch completely...and it didn't affect anything. I also noticed that I can not flash or change to high beams from the regular daytime driving lights.

Turn signals and headlights both don't work...I think this is alarm related..but I'm not sure.

I tried unlocking and locking with both the key and the remote a billion times...but to no avail.

Here's a REALLY grainy video I made with my Blackberry Bold of what shows on the dash as soon as I put back into place the hazard fuse . I have had to keep the fuse out though to avoid burning the hazard light bulbs and draining my battery. :? :?

These hazard lights are on regardless of the car running, off, open or closed. :x :x

Alright, well at least you've eliminated something! That's progress, right?

OK, in this case, I might suspect the 104/108 relay then. It is in the main fuse panel under the hood.

See if you pull that out if the lights shut off, and if that works, you might try swapping them between cars.

But isn't this a headlight relay? The problem I'm having includes the flashers aswell...as I'm sure you know

I think that you've probably got a bad hazard light switch/flasher module.
It's all the same thing in one part, unlike a lot of other cars. Remove and replace.

The headlight thing does throw a little wonkieness in here, though, but the only thing
that they share is the switch in the column...And fuse # 13......weirdness
Maybe two seperate problems? Maybe Lucky # 13? ( Muaha ha ha! )
