Center brake light not working, but license plate lights do?

Post by GlowbugVT »

Hey guys,

First off, I'd like to say thanks for all the help I've found here...I'm trying to revive a badly-neglected '01 V70 that has a whole host of problems. The trans. drain and fill was last weekend's project :) Unfortunately, things are going backwards and I find myself in a bad spot here.

I had both brake lights go a while ago, tested the relay and got no reading where I should have gotten the impedance of the coils...so I have the two individual replacements on order. Today, the center brake light has gone out, too. :x Not getting any voltage to the green connector that goes into the LED socket. 15A brake light fuse is good. The weird thing is, the license plate lights are still on.

My question is, where else can I check to see if I'm getting voltage or not? I just need any brake lights, until I get the relays sorted out for the main lights...or maybe I can yank a relay from something else? I was looking at that S80 relay layout, and it looks like the #7 and #8 positions should be for the brake relays, correct?

Thanks in advance.

check the wire bundle coming out at the hinge of the tailgate.

Common failure in the older V70s, giving you weird brake/backup lights problems.
