Does the transmission feel like it smashes between gears rather than shifting smoothly or does the idle faulter as you pull to a stop?
You may want to check the trans. fluid - if it is brown/burnt, one of the solenoids may be sticking and causing your car to stall.
Otherwise, it may be the idle control valve is unable to react quickly enough to the load taken on/off on the engine between gears, and could probably just use a good cleaning.
