'96 960 Wagon AC compressor replacement questions

Post by ziphius »

Finally have to break down and replace the AC compressor on my wife's '96 960 wagon and have a couple questions. I have a new compressor, drier/accumulator, and orifice tube.

1. I haven't taken a close look, but is it easiest to pull it out through the top of the engine compartment? Looks like taking it through the bottom will run into the oil filter and brake line. Through the top I'll have to pull the power steering pump and alternator, but those aren't too bad.

2. Where is the orifice tube located? I know I could find it sooner or later, but knowing up front might be handy.

3. Do any of the connections require the little slip ring tool or can I get them with just wrenches?

4. How much PAG should I add? Do I just pour it into the compressor ports and give the compressor a spin to distribute it?

5. Can the seals be replaced with generic O-rings seals from the auto parts store, or are there Volvo specific ones?

Thanks for any help! I'll try to post my results and anything helpful I run into during the process.
