2001 XC70 Wont Start
My Volvo died a week ago going down the road. Mechanic tells me bad ignition coil shorted fuse and recommends replacing all five. I've replaced all five as well as the fuse and car still won't start. Cranks fine, but just wont start. Is this characteristic of anything basic or am I going to have to tow the thing to another mechanic?

Did the fuse blow again? How reliable do you think his coil diagnosis was? Was he certain or is this a "throw parts at the problem" thing?

Not sure about the fuse. How does one tell if it's blown?
I've not been to this mechanic before and I'm not sure how he came about his diagnosis. The CEL has never come on and I've been unable to get any codes from the code reader. Although the mechanic came highly recommended, I just couldn't justify the $700+ to replace all five coils. He told me he could replace the fuse and at least get me running so I agreed. When I went to pick the car up, it wouldn't start. We replaced the fuse and it cranked right up. Drove it home and it died in my driveway and hasn't run since in spite of 5 new coils and multiple fuses. Is there something between the coils and the fuse that can be shorting?
Note below the correspondance from the mechanic.
"The issue is related to a high voltage load through the ignition circuit, the fuse blows due to a over load by a Coil or multiple Coils. I would think that a no start after replacing the fuse may be indicating that there are multiple coils draining the circuit of voltage to start the engine. I would start with known good replacement coils and test drive with diagnostic scanner to verify the repair."

This is out of my depth. New coils and the fuse still blows... I just don't know where to go. Maybe someone here will see this and have ideas.

Thanks Matthew -
Is there any wisdom to replacing with a larger fuse? RIght now, there's a 20.

Generally that's a bad idea -- assuming 20 is the correct, factory fuse load. It might get you off a lonely highway at night in an emergency, but the Volvo engineers put a 20 in there for a reason.
