P0014 / P0015 CEL - Air Conditioning???

Post by keithatcpt »

I'm occasionally getting a CEL light indicating that my camshaft is both overadvanced and at the same time overretarded (P0014 and P0015). I get these messages at the same time (at least at the same time that I read the codes with my code reader). I can go for a week or two without the CEL, and car runs great whether the codes are triggered or not.

Here's the thing. It seems like the codes will stay off, but when I turn my air conditioning on, the car throws the CEL for both codes within a day (two trips). Any ideas? I've changed the VVT solenoid, and the one I put in was used but clean. My fuel pressure regulator is good (a bad FP regulator can cause long crank times which can throw a P0015 code). I haven't changed the camshaft position sensor, seems the most likely thing, but I don't want to throw parts at the problem.

The RPMs are slightly lower with the AC on compared to when the AC is off. If the engine dips below 500 rpm, could this cause the problem?

Thanks
Keith

I had the same problem. It takes a couple of faulty cycles to get the P0014 code to come on after it's reset. This is a common problem with S40's, I was told. I had the shop replace the sensor and hub (a $600 repair) because it's usually the hub that's bad, but since the engine was ripped apart to get t the sensor, it's best to do both.

I wanted to do it myself, but couldn't find the darn sensor. Where is it? Pics?

This is probably the sensor, looks like it's on the back of the engine above the turbo. I wonder if it is just gunk and dirt on the hub, or a dirty sensor.
