Mirror Compass not working properly

2009 S80 D3 SE Lux

The compass in my rear view mirror has stopped working properly; it now tells me that I'm heading North or North West regardless of the actual direction. I've tried recalibrating it as per the instructions in the handbook. Is this likely to be a faulty part or is a software update needed? Any ideas welcome.

I see you've had no response so I will give you what I can to perhaps point you in a helpful direction.

Are the letters in the mirror still bright, well defined and the same color? If so I would think that the display is ok. If you have followed the procedure in the users manual exactly; driving slowly in circles etc. and the compass refuses to recalibrate, then all I can suggest is a software problem and a warranty trip to the dealer. Since it is only an 09' I can't imagine any circunstance where there would be such a thing as a software update.

One last thing. I see your in the UK. Has the car been transported lately from one part of the islands to another or from the continent to your current location? Magnetic earth compass changes as we travel long distances and my manual, at least(07'), does point out the effects this has on the accuracy of the car mirror compass.
