I've been battling this for a year or more now. Had diagnostics done and it indicated that a thermostat sensor was the cause. Replaced the sensor and light went off. A week or so later I put gas in and the light came back on. I checked the gas cap. It was on tight and is not cracked. So I've been driving for a year with the check engine light on but now need to fix it so that it will pass a smog test in CA. I took it in today for the smog test and the report stated check engine light failure -- P0410 secondary air injection malfunction.
Anyone have a suggestion on a next step? Help is greatly appreciated.

If you hear a sound in the mornings that sounds linke an airplane, your pump is dead & needs to be replaced. You'll need to replace the SAS valve at the back of the engine and (possibly) relay at the same time.

Would failure of this pump lessen gas mileage or cause other problems if left likeit is? I read somewhere else that I can unhook the battery and the check engine light would go off for a while, at least until I can take it back to the smog check station. ANy advice?

If you are going to get it inspected, NEVER pull the battery cable. You'll knock all the readiness codes set in the computer out, and it will take a few days or driving cycles to re-learn.
Warm up your car with a good 15-20 min drive. Go to Advance Auto or Autozone, and strike up a conversation with one of the guys. Get him to read the codes, and (they're not supposed to, but if you're nice) clear the code for you. Then haul it as quickly as possible over to the inspection station.
My car actually failed inspection due to the stupid light coming on for the P0410 WHILE it was being inspected (in December). But hopefully you can get it to keep from activating this time of year with an already-warm engine taking it over there.

When you clear a code the car STILL has to go thru a readiness cycle as once someone clears a code all the readiness codes go back to not ready
Just because you cleared the code does NOT make it ready for inspection

On my wife's 98 S70 GLT, found my smog pump bad. Check engine light stayed on. Code said SAS. Removed the smog pump; Water intrusion had killed the bearings. No more remanned pumps available. New are $500.00. Because the fault causes the engine computer to run in open loop mode, it was affecting my gas mileage. Went from 31mpg down to 24-25. Was absolutely NOT going to pay the $500!!!!!
Found an old air mattress pump in my garage; 120 vac. Paid $40 for an inverter. Epoxied the OEM air pump fittings onto the air mattress pump, sealed with silicon glue to keep out water. Mounted where old smog pump was, hooked up to OEM air hose under radiator. Ran wires from trunk-mounted inverter to air pump; used 12 vdc signal from OEM air pump harness to turn on 120 vac and ran that mattress pump. End result; check engine light is gone, car runs GREAT, back to 32 mpg, and no more problems. For $40. That was 4 years ago. And still no problems.

You might be able to live on the float between the time the monitors take to set and the CEL set since you can pass smog with up to two monitors not ready. For SAS your conscience is also clear as it does very little to actually help emissions

Rumor has it there is a way to bypass the SAS system altogether, although it is illegal to tamper with environmental systems on your car in some areas. If you type in SAS delete into a search engine you could possibly find a cheap and easy solution. Do not ask me if this works or if this is an easy repair, I would never consider doing anything as vile to the environment as bypassing this system might be ;^)
