I have an 01 S60 which does the same thing. Apparently there was a recall for that problem. There were faulty clips in the tops of the shock towers.
Anyway, check with your dealer about the recalls.

Hi, I am a new member who just purchased a used 2002 S60 Volvo. Iam experiencing the same noise in th right rear of the car. It seems as though it is coming from the shock/strut area. Did you get your problem solved and if so by what method? Thanks Crow

Control arm bushings, on my 02 they ALL were replaced under warranty at 35K miles
