OBDII Scan Tool Advice for 1998 S70

Post by jlrsn »

Which OBDII Scan Tool will read all of the Volvo “Manufacturer Specific Codes” for my 1998 Volvo S70. I already have several computer based OBDII Scan Software programs such as AutoEnginuity for most Generic Codes plus all of Ford's Manufacturer Specific Codes for my Diesel truck but want a handheld tool that works. I haven't found the info I need Searching this site.

I’ve been looking at the Equus Scan Tools such as the E203100 ($152.39) and the E203130 ($246.91). What really works for you? Any advice?

Jim

You need a BSR PPC to read the Volvo codes and reach all the modules.

We are waiting on the new version to be released. There used to be one old one on ebay but I'm not sure if its still there.

That new BRS scanner is really nice. How much is it going to be sold for?

Thanks for the info. I checked and found that the PPC Diagnostic System works with all Volvo from 2001-2007.
See: http://www.ppc-diagnostic.com/

I then continued researching and and after talking with engineers with different handheld OBDII Scanner companies I decided on the Equus 3130 that has an MSRP of $311.23. I initially found the Equus 3130 new discounted for $246.91 but I finally bought a new Equus 3130 from Amazon for $134.23 plus $6.47 shipping for a total of $140.70. The Equus 3130 scans all the generic OBDII Codes plus all of the Volvo “Manufacturer Specific Codes” for my 1998 Volvo S70.

The engineer lead me through their website to a place that has every code that Volvo has even for the 1998 S70 and he advised me that for my applications I didn't need the more expensive scanners and that the Equus 3130 would give me live data as it was happening whereas the 3100 wouldn't. I hope my research helps others that are looking for a handheld OBDII Scanner that you can easily carry everywhere versus the software versions that I needed to take my laptop with me to scan as I have been doing for the last 8+ years!

If the Equus 3130 does not work as I was told I'll send it back and keep looking.
Thanks for your reply,
Jim

The Equus 3130 will only address the manufacturers enhanced OBD codes. Equus will not even talk about the actual Volvo codes. I spoke with them a few years back and again tonight. Currently all Equus scan products can only speak with the ECM . It is blind to the other modules.

The 3130 is avaiallble on Amazon etc for $134

For most repair situations this would be more than you need.

Thanks JDS60R,
I should have the 3130 that I ordered from Amazon early next week and I'll see what it will do. It cost me $134.23 plus $6.47 shipping for a total of $140.70. The PPC Diagnostic System only works with the 2001-2007 Volvos. It also does not work with the S80 D/D5/TDI 1999-2000, the C70 98-05, and the S/V40 96-04. The 1998 year Volvo is an orphan in many ways!
Thanks for checking with Equus,
Jim
