Power steering fluid question

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Power steering fluid question

Post by Electrick »

Hi I have a 99 S80 T6 with 168k, still going strong. I've owned it for about 8 months now. My owners manual suggests to use ATF fluid in the power steerng resivour. :o Is this correct, if so which one should I use, the same Dextron III that goes in the transmission? I thought it sounded kinda funny but help from someone that knows would help :) Thanx in advance Rick

I looked into this a few months ago. In the manual it says ATF, at the dealer they say the volvo stuff which is $30/L. I went back to the dealer after purchasing the Volvo stuff and asked him, to which he says thats what his computer tells him to use. I have been using ATF in my S90 for years without problems. In the S80 I put the volvo stuff to top it off, but I think either would work.. At another volvo repair shop they told me ATF is fine, and only the newer volvo's use the Volvo stuff.
