Dead alternator

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Dead alternator

Post by emk »

I've been getting the 'EL. POWER SYSTEM SERVICE REQUIRED' message on my dash for the last 2-3 weeks. I plug in an OBDII reader to see if the car is spitting out any codes, zip.
I'm driving home from work the other day when all of a sudden the car starts limping, speedo needle drops to zero, ABS service message and STC service message appear on the dash (maybe others messages too that I may have missed). I brake safely as I'm approaching a red light. Upon the light turning green I try to accelerate and the car is dead. Try to start the car and the starter is clicking (not getting enough juice from the battery).

Long story short it turns out the alternator is kaput, beyond repair. My auto electrician says he tried to re-condition it but says it is hopeless (I saw it myself) and drops in a brand new one for $450.

Has anyone else had alternator trouble similar to my experience? Other than the dash message, I had no other prior indication that it was on its way out.

PS: I've just joined this forum recently and I'm pretty impressed by the content and help by everyone :)

What did he do in his attempt to recondition it?...The only things replaceable are the brushes and the bearings...(or the voltage regulator which carries the brushes)

Don't know exactly, probably all of what you mentioned. The thread at the end of the rod (or alternator axle) was mutilated. I don't think he would've been able to screw the pulley back on it.
