air conditioning compressor
I have a 1984 240 wagon with a York compressor. the air is working fine but the clutch makes a lot of noise when the air is off. I seems to be moving back and forth a little when it is off and vibrating. Should I replace the clutch and if so is there a specific one I should get?

When the clutch is engaged and the A/C is operating the clutch is turning the compressor...When the A/C is shut off the clutch is disengaged, the compressor is not running, and the clutch pulley is turning on a bearing in the clutch...If the compressor is noisy when the clutch is dis-engaged, the bearing in the clutch pulley is going down and will soon seize, making it impossible to shut the A/C off...It won't be electricaly engaged but it will be mechanically locked because of the bad bearing...The only repair is to replace the clutch...It should be possible to do it withoout removing th compressor...Remove the air cleaner housing to gain working room...
The clutch is available from FTC Groton for $110...

No...Don't remove the drive belt until after you ramove the compressor's center bolt...That will help to hold the pulley from turning when you remove the bolt...belac wrote:thanks. do I need to use a torque wrench?
Yes exactly jerrymcc, I also encountered this problem a long time ago. I brought it into our nearest shop. The repairman told me that we need to replace your clutch.jerrymcc wrote:When the clutch is engaged and the A/C is operating the clutch is turning the compressor...When the A/C is shut off the clutch is disengaged, the compressor is not running, and the clutch pulley is turning on a bearing in the clutch...If the compressor is noisy when the clutch is dis-engaged, the bearing in the clutch pulley is going down and will soon seize, making it impossible to shut the A/C off...It won't be electricaly engaged but it will be mechanically locked because of the bad bearing...The only repair is to replace the clutch...It should be possible to do it withoout removing th compressor...Remove the air cleaner housing to gain working room...

Hello everyone,
My daughter was driving and smoke/smell started to come from under hood. Looked and smelled like clutch material.
There was a line of oil on the frame inline with the rear of the AC pulley and a hissing noise. I assume that leaking freon.
My question. Replacing the clutch will not correct this I assume?
Has anyone ever bypassed the AC compressor with a belt from crank, alt and waterpump to eliminate the compressor?
Looks like the belt from AC to powersterring is close to 1:1?
Compressor maybe on christmas list, but would still like to drive it.
Thanks

The IPD conversion kit will only work on early 240's that used the 2 cylinder York compressor...It will not line up properly on later 240's that used a variety of wobble-washer compressors...A different drive pulley was used on the power steering pump and the spacer that IPD supplies cannot be installed...karibakid wrote:check ipd they have a spacer re air con belts just a thought cheers jack m
The problem is that the power steering pump is driven by the A/C compressor clutch pulley, so the compressor drive belt cannot be removed without losing power steering...A fix can be done by using one belt instead of two on the alternator and running the second alternator belt from the crankshaft pulley to the power steering pump...It lines up perfectly, but there is a caveat...The ignition timing marker lug on the timing belt cover has to be removed or the belt will rub HARD on it...
