Speaker sizes

Post by VolvoFreak »

I'm finding conflicting information all over the net about this. I want to start replacing the speakers in my car and don't know what sizes to order! I have a '93 850glt with speakers in the dash, front & rear doors and on the rear deck.

Not sure about the dash tweeters. I am thinking 2", the doors are 5 1/4". Back ones are the 6 x 9's. Good Luck.

Sweet.. That's what I thought. Any clue on the depth for the door speakers?

No idea on the depth of door speakers.

Dash takes 7" speakers.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

7" on the dash!? Are you sure ('93 850glt)? The grills dont even look big enough for 4" speakers...

I got a pair of 5.25" Kicker's for the front door. They fit perfectly eventhough I needed to drill some holes for the mounting screws as the new speakers didn't line up with the factory holes.

Wow, they are so wrong it's not funny! I pulled the grill earlier and there are maybe 2" tweeters in there, but I think with a bit of coaxing I can get 3.5" in the same hole.

7" tweeters in the dash? That is nuts. They aren't even a third of that.

I heard that I must buy speakers that have 8 ohms for the Volvo 850 not 4 ohms. Is this true?

Yes and no. The front door and dash speakers are 4-ohms. However, the read door and deck speakers are 8-ohms, but are wired in parallel. By doing this, and according to ohms law, by wiring 2 8-ohm loads in parallel, the amp only sees a 4-ohm total load. If you disconnect the rear door speakers, you can put a 4-ohm speaker on the rear deck though.

Code: Select all

Front door left  -----------------> amp
(4 ohms each)
Front door right -----------------> amp

dash left  -----------------------> amp
(4 ohms each)
dash right -----------------------> amp

rear door left  ---
(8 ohms each)      \
rear door right --  \
                  \  \
deck left ---------\--+-----------> amp
(8 ohms each)       \ (4 ohm load)
deck right ----------+------------> amp
