S80 T6 check engine light

Post by bajaman »

Hi all. Please accept my apologies in advance if this topic has come up before.
I recently purchased a '99 S80 T6 with 61,000 miles. The car is in great shape and I have the dealer service records which seem to indicate that it hasn't had any abnormal frequency of repair issues. I realize there are a lot of owners that experienced significant problems with this year and model.
Today when driving home from work the 'check engine' light came on and the message text indicated the emissions system needed servicing.
I just wondered if this is one of those annoying and continuing "faults" that I can expect, or if there is a likelihood of true issues? In other cars I have seen that replacing the O2 sensor usually fixes this. Anyone have any insight into what I might expect?
My dealer said he would "try and work me in within the next 2 weeks" and seemed disinterested in the whole deal. The former owner of the car told me that she'd had the same experience with the dealer's service department on even the most minor things like scheduling an oil change.
Once again, is this lack of dealership cooperation normal?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Just a FYI update.

Ran a can of Valvoline injector cleaner thru and the light went out and has stayed out.

If it's really a fault, the light will come back on. When you fix the fault, the light will diagnose it the fix and probably go out in a day or two.

With my 850 I had a front O2 sensor go wonky. Got the light. Reset the light. Of course it came back because the sensor was truly bad. Replaced the sensor. Light went out after 2-4 days.

I don't know how to pull codes on an S80, but that will tell you where the problem lies.

Do you think the emissions light came on due tro bad gas? I had the very same issue happen today just after putting gas in the car.

Ultimately I took mine to the dealer where they replaced the MAP sensor.
It was only $300 so that was not too bad.

Two cars. Four turbos. Gotta love it.
