Removing gear shift knob on 89 240 automatic?

Replacing the cracked plastic shift indicator cover. I have removed the top button and the overdrive button on the left side. I have pulled and tapped with a rubber hammer, but it doesn't come off. Do I just need to pull harder? I amafraid to until I hear from someone who has done this. Thank you

Got it off. the rubber split a bit at the bottom. I just had to pull hard as hell.
