Armrest Compartment--phone looking thing

Can anyone tell me what the thing in my armrest compartment of my XC70 is that looks like an old style cell phone? It is connected with a male 5-6 prong plug to a female cord that runs under the compartment. It's 6-8 inches long and 1-2 inches wide. I disconnected it and, as yet, nothing bad has happened.

What year is your car. The manual for my 2001 indicates that there was an option for a cell phone, so that could be it. Do you have cell phone buttons on the steering wheel?
