TRANSMISSION OVERFILL SYMPTOMS

Post by gchardy »

15 months ago I had a repair facility (Mr.Volvo,in Calgary, Alberta, Canada) replace the automatic transmission fluid in my 2001 Volvo V70 24T at 130,000 miles or so. Now 20,000 miles later it appears the transmission has failed and in pulling the dipstick the reading was about two inches above the upper fill mark. It was overfilled by the shop and they failed to correct and make it right at the time.

What exactly takes place (what damage is done) when a transmission is overfilled and driven extensively thereafter?

This transmission (following hot operations after highway driving) went from a perfect normal state to instantly.......
1)NOT being able to shift from 'park', into any gear after shift lever movement... on engine shut down and restart it engaged the gear.
2) once under way, it would stall out if the car was brought to a stop.
3) finally the transmission then failed to shift out of the first gear to a higher gear.
4) in reverse, it shutters as if fluid deprived.
All this in a 5 km drive. It now sits awaiting it's fate.

The warning window indicates "Transmission Service Urgent"
Here is what the OBD reader is telling me;
-P0733 Gear 3 Incorrect Ratio
-P0740 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit / Open

Thanks in advance for your feedback. Graham.

01-02 MY volvo trannies have a high failure rate because of software issues and shitty valve bodies, even with the correct amount of fluid, and that's a fact.

I don't believe that, if indeed they overfilled the transmission, this cause the failure. Take the car to the dealer, correct the fluid overfill, have them clear the codes, download the latest tranny module software update, reset the adaptives and do drive cycle thru the computer and see if that helps.
