2001 V70XC Grinding noise in front end

Post by johngrant67 »

2001 V70XC Grinding noise in front end: I get a grinding noise from the front end that starts at low speeds, gets louder and higher pitch as speed increases. Seems to get more pronounced on corners like on-ramps. I suspect wheel bearings, but I can't rule out CV joints. I searched the forum and found a couple of similar problems, but nothing definitive. Thanks.

If your brakes have been done recently check the position of the metal clip. It can be put on wrong pushing the brake caliper out into the wheel.

I had this same problem (especially on ramps..curves) on my 2002 v70xc....it was the rubber engine mount that is under the engine on the passenger side....I had it replaced in sept. 2010 and the grinding went away... took shop 30min. I would check to see if it is worn or broken. Incidentally, the axles were replaced in 2008 as well.

My 01 V70 T5a also has a rumble when I make a hard left turn (not wheel rub, it does that too). I just had the fuel pump recall done, so the dealer does a 28-point safety check.. I had kind of thought I'd hear about the half shaft issue, but it came back instead with worn lower A arm bushings, worn sway bar links, and struts with strut mounts. In checking myself, I do agree with the A arm (front) bush, I could see a tear. Figured the sway bar links were "because we are there" as they didn't seem to have any play. The struts seem fine and when tested, level in a single cycle. The mounts also seem okay, as trying to torque them I can't rotate them at all.

Still I will need to replace the A arm (or bushes). With the rumble I had, I figure add in the half shafts. So the question to the forum team is this: Do the A arm and half shaft at the same time, or do one then the other? I know I should do both at the same time, as I already have it apart, so why not? The why not is I want to learn what is actually causing the noise I hear! Is it possible that worn A arms and links could make this noise? So I guess the real question is which do I do first, or if the group answer is the A arms and links can't make this noise, do both at the same time? Thanks in advance!

Folks,
I had a garage diagnose and they told me it's the driver's side hub assembly (bearing) gone bad. I've got it apart in the garage right now, at least as far as the four bolts that hold the assy in. How the heck do I get those four bolts out? They are so close to the cv joint that I can't get a box end or a socket on it. Any ideas??? BTW, it's an 02.

FYI, after I removed the retainer bolt in the end of the shaft, I could create some play in the CV axle by shoving it towards the engine which allowed me to BARELY access the bolt heads with an 18mm socket and also an open end/box end wrench. Once I finished the job I test drove it and the problem was solved. Thanks to everyone who added comments.

My 2001 T5 V70 manual transmission and ft wheel drive: The noise diagnosed as bearings by two shops ended up being ABS sensors/rings. The bearing surface for the ABS arrangement are pressed ring on the drive shafts, which cracks when corrosion is allowed to build up over time. The clicking noise got louder as speed increases with the sensor hitting the ring causing obvious damage. The fix was to repair one side and replace the other ring and of course the sensors. A drivability problem as the feed goes to the control module. The stability traction control off would allow the vessel to run however if engaged wouldn’t.
Hope this helps, not sure if the xc is the same config however an easy check and a lot less expensive than the other option.
