2002 V70 XC Wagon, transmission problems.

Post by jbrauner »

From the information I have gathered I am likely not alone in having an 02 V70 XC with a bad transmission. Mine has only 94k miles on it and after about 20 mins of driving the transmission will slip and hard shift especially when down shifting. The car drives like a dream otherwise and the trans shifts perfectly for the first 20 minutes. I have had both a Volvo dealer service center and an independent transmission shop say that the transmission itself is good but the valve body is faulty. My issue is that I could spend over $1000 to fix the valve body and find out the transmission is in fact the real problem. Maybe some other V70 owners have been through this and can offer some insight.
Thanks!

You need more than just a valve body, you need a complete rebuild or a new transmission
This is classic 2002 tranny failure

If you can give me a good reason why I should lie to someone to give him "hope" then I would be glad to do so.
I've had four (4) 2002 trannies pack it in and this is the main symptom

My 2002 v70 had its transmission replaced at 30k (previous owner). Even if jbrauner replaces his tranny, as in my case, what is the liklihood of him (my) having problems down the road with a new tranny? For the record, my transmission shifts fine, though not as smoothly as other volvos I've driven.

^depends if the software was updated to the newest version or not. flush or drain / fill with the proper fluid and make sure the software is up-to-date, that's the best thing you can do to ensure your transmission's life.
