grunch noise while turning and backing up

Post by lnyboer »

Hi Group,
I've search pretty hard to find something similar to this problem in the forum and haven't read anything yet. I've got 150,000 on my 2000 V70XC. This car runs great forward! But when I back straight out of my drive all is normal till I turn into the street while backing (left or right) then I get just one GRUNCH noise. Once in a great while I get a faint grunch as I pull away forward but usually not. Now if I back up and turn again after driving a little while, I may or may not get the noise again. It seems as though driving for a while prevents the noise from happening again, perhaps something has warmed up?. The noise defiantly sounds like it is coming from the back. It causes me to jump like I'm running something over.

Early spring I replaced the drive shaft with a Colorado drive shaft rebuild, I've always had good tires and rotated regularly to keep them equal. I've replaced the differential and bevel gear oil about 2 or less years ago. I replaced the rear shocks this fall and that was around when the noise began. I've checked the tightness on the shock towers and the lower frame and it all seems fine.

I see some rubber shock parts in the rear suspension. Has anyone ever had them slip back and forth? It's kind of a rubber slipping sound...wet rubber soles on a shiny floor sound. Anyone have this happen to them and find a solution?

Anti-sway bar bushings, suspension link bushings, calipers, parking brake shoes are a few things that come to mind.
You could duplicate this in a short distance with someone standing close by to listen and help pinpoint the source.
