Smoke out exhaust on start up

Post by TuHandy »

Hello,

I just rebuilt my motor from bottom to top. It has less than 1000 miles on it and I am noticing a small amount of blueish smoke from the exhaust on start up. I replaced all the normal items rings bearings, ect., had valve job done, new valve seals, ect. Motor has great compression again. Checked the plugs they are all clean and dry.

I did not touch the turbo so I was wondering if possibly the internals of the turbo (like a seal) might be a cause.

Thanks

I am still leaning towards a bad seal in the turbo. The smoke on start up is getting worse.

Does anyone know what type of turbocharger is in a 1997 850 t5?

I believe it is a Mitsubishi TD04, maybe a Garret, Not sure.

Has anyone bought a rebuild kit for thier turbo?

Just ordered a turbo rebuild kit for a Mitsubishi TD04HL-15G, which my 97 T-5 has in it. The kit contains all the bearings, o rings, ect that you need to rebuild the turbo.

I pulled off the tube that comes off of the turbo compressor and I noticed a pretty good amount of oil residue in it, so I am pretty sure a bad seal in the turbo is the cause of the puff of blue smoke on start up.

I will post after rebuilding and let everyone know if that was the problem.
