I have that CHECK ENGINE light that has been on for some time on my 1999 V70 XC AWD. I have continued to drive as a couple of mechanics told me I can; however I now need to pass the VA Emissions Inspections to renew my car's registration.
* This car had alot of issues and repairs made to it.
I was told now that there is a front differential leak of transmission fluid and that is the source of preformance trouble. The thing is I have NEVER seen any transmission fluid leak and think if it were a problem I would actually have seen that!
I brought this car into the dealer a few years ago as I experienced preformance sluggishness and the elecrtical problem of Check Engine light coming on and dropping of power. They told me they had to repair the seal on the engine and had taken it off and did some engine work. What "Engine Work" had been required remained a bit amorphous to me.
Of course I have NEVER gone back to that Dulles, VA VOLVO dealer; and the crazy thing is that AFTER that repair AND ONLY AFTER THAT REPAIR I then had an oil leak. I just drove the car the next two years checking my oil regularly and adding it as needed.
The retired Volvo mechanic that just did the amazing body and electrical work told me however that there is not an oil leak at this point ( enough gunk may have build up to compensate for the problem of poor seals which the dealer CAUSED when trying to "fix" something which wasn't broken!); but that he found the front differential transmission leak.
He said to keep and eye on that and fill it as needed.
At this point however that CHECK ENGINE Light ( which was off after I picked it up as the mechanic cleared it) has come on again along with ETS light . I am questioning that there is a transmission problem at all and wondering if the trouble might be that pesky ETS trouble. I have driven the car with those lights on for at least two years with intermittent sluggishness.
Transmission trouble? OR that ETM defect?

Go to an auto parts store (most except NAPA will read them for free) and write down the codes that their scanner spits out and come back here. Even if the CEL is not currently lit, there should still be codes stored in the computer.

Thanks BE and j Friend ran codes and here is what I have:
P0751 shift solendoid
P1618
MIL ON
I have ordered all three solenoids for this car S1/S2 and the third ( which I forget what called technically but I think is the shift solenoid) THANKS TO THIS FORUM figuring out what is needed ( aware it likely only actually needs the 3rd but might as well replace all while at it.)
I also ordered a timing belt, another belt and water pump as might as well take care of those while in there.
Cabin filter nominal cost, and hope that with transmission fluid flush, brake fluid flush and change of oil and that filter that I can then drive this thing without the dash lighting up like a Christmas tree.
The transmission repair guy looked and diagnoses work but from all I read I am thinking the solenoid might be the trouble. The car is slow in switching gears it seems when in stop and go traffic and accellerating but fine when on the highway. Considering I was advised to junk this thing three years ago and am still driving, I don't actually believe the transmission is really the trouble.
*Ticket for lapsed VA inspection so need to get this through emissions. They gave me a continuance to get it done... almost there!
