C70 Questions

Post by davvver »

Hi Everyone,

Currently I drive a 98 V70 se NA. I like this car because it is simple and reliable.

Like all of you I am a big Volvo fan and I think these are great cars to drive for little money and at the same time they still look good and are respected. A few weeks ago I was about to buy a brand new honda accord 4 cyl. I want to keep the wagon but maybe start using it in the winter (to save fuel). My current winter vehicle is a tundra.... I have always like the style of the C70. I was thinking of looking for one as a summer vehicle but I have a few questions first.

I have read alot about the 850/v/s70 issues or maintenance requirements... things like ETM, Timing belt, flametrap requirements etc. I would like to know... the C70 essentially being the same car... Can i just assume it has the same issues? Less issues? More???

What are the main differences?

How about the convertible top system? Are there issues with that?

Lastly, I don't know much about turbos aside from how to properly take care of one. Since I will most C70s have higher mileage now... What should I look for in a turbo and how long can i expect to have it last or should I just stick with the powertrain I have and maybe look for a sportier 850 or S70 NA?

Almost every car has a timing belt that needs to be replaced. Volvo belts are cheaper to change out than most other cars.
Yes these cars have all the same "issues" and more. The tops can have problems at time and the seats and windows seem to have more problems than an s or a v70.

No more than any turbo. volvo turbos are generally good.
As long as the oil was changed often you should not have a problem

Care for the c70 convertible top:
I have tried to find information on lubricating the convertible frame joints but with little success. On U-tube you will find lithium and silicone dry lubricant. My question is, will this be the proper lub.for the Volvo?

One of the issues for these cars both the C70 convertible and coupe are the door window mechanisms. Parts are hard to find and they are way more complex than the sedan and wagon windows. The windows use a wire mechanism to work and come in a 'cassette' which is about $1000 last I checked if you can even get them. I had been tempted a couple of times for a coupe C70, but my large size and height made it a non-starter for me. I have seen several up for sale and majority have driver window issues. Even dealers run when you mention this issue! Other than that the other guys have said goes. Mechanically the same as a FWD sedan/wagon, it is the interior that is mostly different.

Don't all the 5cyl engines use a Japanese turbo? Not to mention auto transmission? I know both my turbos on my T6 say made in Germany and has a American automatic transmission so definitely he would hate the T6. Your "motorhead" friend sounds like the typical younger generation to me who were born too late to drive the cars from the glory days unmolested and with the correct leaded gasoline to run right. June

At least they weren't Partial Zeros

Mitsubishi made Volvo Turbos up until Early P2s, I think, then KKK perhaps?
