I'm not sure for your car but I have seen these things.

On some cars the lights automatically come on. In the 'automatic mode you can not switch to highbeams that stay on. If you rotate the headlight switch to the "On" position you can get high beams to stay.

On other cars flash to pass (high beams momentary)is accomplished by pulling the stalk towards the driver while high beams constant is accomplished by pushing away.

Page 32 has the description for your car. The headlight switch must be on and the high beams are activated by pulling towards you.

If you are doing this already and it won't stay on - I would suspect the switch within the stalk .

here is the quote from the xc owners manual located at www.volvocars.com (community) (your volvo)(document search)

A - Headlights, parking lights

O All lights off

Models with daytime running lights: Low beam headlights will automatically come on if the ignition key is in position II. Front and rear parking lights and license plate lights will also be on.

Volvo recommends the use of daytime running lights. If, however, you would prefer to have these lights turned off (USA only), please consult your Volvo retailer. Please note that the use of daytime running lights is mandatory in Canada.

Parking lights on

Headlights, parking lights, license plate lights and instrument panel illumination are on if the ignition key is in position II. If the headlight switch is in position all lights will go out when the ignition is switched off.

The headlight switch must be in this position before the high beams will function.

Switch from high to low beams and vice versa by pulling the turn signal switch lever on the left side of steering column toward you.

Thanks for the comments . Operation is not the issue we have had the car since new and they did stay on for many years when the lever was pulled. I assume it is the switch and would like to know how to change it .

If you are referring to the switch in the dash, it basically just pops out. Get something small and wedge behind it and pry, be careful not to mar the dash. Once out it will simply unplug. If you are referring to the stalk, you have to remove the top and bottom covers on the steering column (torx screws) and there should be two small phillips screws holding the stalk in place where it connects. You may have to pop out the speedo cluster surround as well when doing this.

Be sure switch is in the straight up and down position as high beams do not work in the other two positions.

This behavior has bugged me since we bought our 2004 V70 R in the summer. We have a choice: a) use Xenons in the daytime as DRL and have high beam ability at night, or b) use the DRL lights in daytime, extending the Xenons' life (preferred), but no high beam (except flash-to-pass).
