rear parking shoes installed, can't get new rotor on 99V70R

Post by casey »

I've done brake shoes many times but never had such a hard time getting a new rotor on over them. Any trick? Other than that the lazarus project goes well. 99 AWD V70R, rebuilt/replaced turbo, pcv oil trap, all vac lines, salvage yard bevel angle gear installed, full tune up, completely new front suspension, and now new brakes all around. if I cant just get these darn rortors on I will have saved another one fron the junk yard.

you did back off the adjusters?
The last time I pulled rotors and inspected everything and adjusted the park brake, I had to push and move the shoes several times before the rotor would go over the shoes.

I would suggest having the rear parking brake drums turned at an auto parts store to help you past the rust ridge but you got them off in the first place so they should go back on. All other advice is valid, the shoes need to be more or less centered and the adjusters should be all the way in.

I did a writeup years ago on parking brakes that may or may not help you.

You shouldn't have to have anything but a rust ridge removed, if there is a ridge.
This assumes you have the correct shoes.

The apply expander piece may be the problem or maybe stuck cables.
Is the problem on both sides?
I'm trying to think of some way, with readily available items you may on hand, to measure the diameter of the installed shoes so you can compare it to the measurement of the drum. If you have 7 1/8 inch shoes and drum is 6 15/16 inch then we know there is a too thick shoes or wrong apply expander/stuck cable problem. If the dimensions are reasonable then it has to be the shoe centering.
I pulled my rotors not long ago and I considered something had broken or otherwise gone wrong as I could not get the rotor back on. After I compared some feature of the backing plate relative to the shoes I could see the shoes were not centered. I scooted them around and then the drum would go on.

Even sand paper on the rust edge will do it.

Have you backed off the adjustment under center console ALL the way?
