2002 S60 dies at 500rpm

Post by crabbypatties »

I have a 2002 Volvo s60 with 114k miles, and While in traffic slowing down it begins to shutter at 500rpm and if the gas is not pressed it eventually dies. It restarts fine. I have had the vehicle in to Volvo service for a software upgrade to the ETM as I thought that it was the issue, Volvo service said that they could not find any fault codes related to the vehicle dieing. could it possibly be the MAP sensor or something else?

Its not supposed to go below 700 so I'm not surprised it stalls at 500. The throttle has a servo on it to control the idle speed.
I would make sure the throttle plate is clean and run the car for codes and report back.

You may want to unplug the MAF and see how it performs as well.

Share if yours is a turbo or not.

Sorry, it is a non-turbo.

***UPDATE***

I checked the MAF first by disconnecting it and drove it a short distance. The rpm's no longer dipped below 700 and did not shutter one bit, nor did I experience the vehicle dieing.

Thank you so much JDS60R!! I will be replacing the MAF first thing tomorrow.
