V50 Grinding Vibration under acceleration

Post by CharlotteV50 »

I own a 2005 Volvo V50 T5 AWD and have been experiencing some odd vibration and noise under acceleration. Noise comes from the front right area, and definately not from the rear of the car.

When inspecting the car for issues that may cause the noise, I noticed the inner CV boot leaking on the front right axle. I went ahead and replaced the axle with new part. Noise continued.

I took the advice from a friend and disconnected the center drive shaft and test drove it. The noise completely went away. So I figured the shaft was unbalanced or bad. It already seemed to have a bearing set in the back in bad shape, so I ordered and installed another shaft just to make sure it wouldnt be faulty. Noise returned.

I understood that the center drive shaft might have issue with being unbalanced, so I rotated the shaft one set of mounting holes and re-test drove it. No change.

I rotated the shaft the the last set of mounting holes and re-test drove again. No change.

So, what else could it be? It is not apparent under normal acceleration, but only under moderate to heavy, and it sounds like a grinding vibration. Its erratic and doesn't necessarily happen all the time.

Could the noise be coming from the hydraulic engine mount? I've read that some interesting things happen when that goes out, but I haven't replaced it yet.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful and appreciated.

Thanks!

The front engine mount (frt of engine, rh side of engine compartment) is collapsed and needs to be replaced.

Hi Jimmy,

I am having the same exact issue on my 2007 Volvo V50 T5, AWD, M66. I am getting the grinding/vibrating sounds upon strong acceleration and lots of small klunking/chatter over bumps. Are you confident this is the issue?

Thanks,

Eric A.
