When I accelerate with my 1987 Volvo 740 Station Wagon I have to take my foot off the gas to get it to kick into the next gear. Could this be a problem with old transmission fluid or is my transmission on it's way to the junk heap?
Thanks!

My problem is simular. The RPM goes up to 3,000 before going into 3rd
gear. It seams that the transmission is not moving into the next gear and the engin is racing at a very high level. I am thinking that I should replace the cable that goes down to the transmission. I have 740 GL 1989 Volvo.
